The hospital has more than 535 beds and more than 2,000 staff, with facilities including 19 operating theatres, 19 intensive care beds, three cardiac catheter labs and five birthing suites. Over 800 Visiting Medical Practitioners work with clinical staff to deliver care in a broad range of acute tertiary level medical and surgical services, with particular strengths in cancer care, cardiac care, women’s and children’s health, and complex surgical care.

The Wesley provides a range of tertiary level services across more than 30 specialities, including cardiology, urology, neurosurgery, gastroenterology, orthopaedics and maternity and women’s health, backed by an intensive care unit, coronary care unit, 24 hour emergency centre, renal dialysis, radiology, radiation therapy, pathology, pharmacy, IVF, haematology and oncology services.

The hospital is home to Australia’s first Robotic Surgery Centre of Excellence and is the busiest robotic surgery programme. The Wesley is also well known for the Kim Walters Choices Programme which offers free support to men, women and families facing breast or gynaecological cancer. A major expansion is underway, with work starting on a new quarter-billion-dollar medical services building attached to the existing hospital. The Wesley is easily accessible by public transport, located next to Auchenflower railway station and bus routes along Coronation Drive.

Gastroenterology Services

The Wesley Hospital is one of Australia’s largest gastrointestinal facilities, offering a comprehensive range of diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic services for diseases of the oesophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, gallbladder, liver and pancreas. All gastroenterologists have sub-specialty interests across the board in the discipline and work jointly with gastrointestinal surgery and oncology specialists.

The endoscopic procedures are performed in a modern unit with four fully integrated procedure rooms with the latest technology, and are undertaken as day-case procedures under sedation or general anaesthetic. Endoscopic services include colonoscopy, gastroscopy, capsule endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for characterisation of upper GI and pancreatic lesions with fine needle biopsy capability and ERCP for management of bile duct and pancreatic duct conditions including stone removal and stent placement.

Conditions treated by the gastroenterology team include GORD, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), coeliac disease, Barrett’s oesophagus, biliary tract disease, diseases of the pancreas, hepatitis B and C and all other liver diseases and upper and lower gastrointestinal cancer screening, diagnosis and ongoing care.
